Beowulf LRJ #1

In the story of Beowulf the people are shown to value their king and respect, this is shown in the story from this passage. "Behavior thats admired is the path to power among people everywhere."(Seamus Heaney, Beowulf line 25) They value their community and the mead hall which is shown to be elegant and large representing their strength and the sense of community. "it was like old times in the echoing hall, proud to talk and the people happy."(line 642)
Here are some of the many alliterations in Beowulf "Then out of the night came the shadow stalker, stealthy and swift."(line 703) the alliterations in the story add to the eerie feel of the story and it also gives the sentence more meaning. This sentence "Nor did the creature keep him waiting but struck suddenly and started in."(line 39) adds to the suspense that was building up as Grendel was lurking in the village. Alliterations in the story play a major role in making the story more interesting.
The kennings in the story of Beowulf gives more meaning to the item they are trying to describe. Like "hauling his doom to the demons' mere."(line 845) meaning that Grendel's death has come . "darkness gathered again over the world and stealthy night shapes came stealing forth under the cloud murk"(line 649) This kenning shows that the earth was covered in darkness once again as they await for Grendel to attack.
